How to give a candle
people actually love
We’re new around here — but we didn’t open a candle shop without knowing a thing or two about what makes a gift land beautifully. Spoiler: it’s not the price tag.
Let’s be honest. We’ve all received a candle that smelled vaguely of “department store changing room” and burned out in a long weekend. It sat on the shelf, unused, a polite reminder that gift-giving is hard.
It doesn’t have to be. A well-chosen candle is one of the most genuinely thoughtful gifts you can give — warm, personal, useful, and beautiful all at once. You just need to know what you’re looking for. Luckily, that’s exactly our thing.
The four things that actually matter
-
Burn time — more than you’d think
A candle that’s gone in 20 hours isn’t a gift, it’s a tease. Look for 40–60 hours minimum. That’s the difference between “oh, that was nice” and “I’ve been burning this for two months and I’m devastated it’s nearly done.” (All TSC candles burn for 50–60 hours. Just saying.)
-
Scent throw — the real test
If you have to hover over the flame to smell it, something has gone wrong. A quality candle gently fills a room — you notice it when you walk back in from the kitchen. Soy wax releases fragrance slowly, evenly, and without overwhelming the space.
-
The vessel — it lives on after the wax
A beautiful jar doesn’t get thrown away — it becomes a pencil holder, a planter, a trinket dish. The best gifting candles are ones the recipient repurposes. TSC candles are made in 100% recycled glass, designed specifically to have a second (and third) life.
-
Scent — think of them, not you
Gift the scent for the person, not the one you’d buy yourself. When in doubt, lean fresh and clean for minimalists, warm and woody for the homebody, floral for romantics. The right unexpected scent is the most memorable gift of all.
Match the scent to the person
Still not sure where to start? Here’s your cheat sheet.
The one who needs a moment
Couldn’t Resist (Ch I) — grapefruit, sea salt, jasmine. Feels like open windows and a deep breath.
Shop Ch I →The one who never slows down
Take Your Time (Ch II) — eucalyptus, mint, cedarwood. A gentle nudge to pause. Works every time.
Shop Ch II →The romantic at heart
Before I Forget (Ch III) — jasmine, sandalwood, amber. The scent of lingering just a little longer.
Shop Ch III →The one with strong opinions
What’s Stopping You (Ch V) — fig, blackcurrant, cedarwood. For the person who never overthinks a yes.
Shop Ch V →“The best candle gift isn’t the most expensive one. It’s the one that makes someone feel like you actually paid attention.”

The quick gifting checklist
Run through this before you buy — for us or anyone else.
- 40+ hour burn time. Anything less is a lovely gesture, not a lasting gift.
- 100% soy wax. Clean burn, no soot, better scent throw. Worth it every time.
- A vessel worth keeping. Recycled glass, ceramic, a beautiful tin — the jar should outlive the candle.
- Scent matched to the recipient. Their home, their vibe, their pace — not yours.
- Presentation that needs no apology. If you have to say, “I meant to wrap it better,” that’s information.
